History of AOMC. DOWN THE MEMORY LANE.

ABOUT US

The Amuwo Odofin Muslim Community came into existence with the arrival of some Muslim Brothers and Sisters into the Estate in 1983.  The few members then quickly swung into action by coming together and observing their five daily prayers adroitly inside the make shift structure met on ground.  Valiant efforts were made to put up a temporary Mosque but were faced with stiff opposition resulting in the demolition of the temporary structure.  All these problems  were thus regarded as teething problems that were later surmounted due to dint of hard work, perseverance, total commitment of members and above all, timely intervention of Late Justice Muri Okunola who was then the DPP of Lagos State and of course our indefatigable member, Alhaji Yakub Abiodun Balogun, the Former HOS, Lagos State.

AOMC History Cont'd

In 1986, the Muslim Community under the able Chairmanship of Late Alhaji Abdul Lateef Ajado Buraimoh of blessed memory, formally applied for the registration as a corporate body from the Federal Ministry of Internal Affairs.  We are satisfied to say that the Muslim Community was thus registered that same year with the issuance of Certificate of Incorporation No: 4489 of 9th December, 1986 with the following members as its Board of Trustees:

  1. Alhaji Basheer Ola Alawiye
  2. Alhaji Fatai Adebayo Hassan
  3. Alhaji Shamsideen  Tunde Agboke
  4. Alhaji Mohammed Basheer Olatunji Ibraheem
  5. Alhaja Humunihair Aribike Badru

Having succeeded in getting the body incorporated, the Muslim Community in 1988, formally applied for the piece of Land on which the Central Mosque is built from the Lagos State Government.  The Land was eventually allocated the same year with the Certificate of Occupancy No: 69/69/1988 of 18th March, 1988.

In early 1991, the Muslim Community mooted the idea of putting up a befitting Central Mosque having secured the Land.  Arc. Taofeek Sasore, an esteemed member of the Muslim Community voluntarily designed the magnificent edifice free of charge.  The Architectural design was ably supervised by the team of Arcs. M. A. T. Mogaji and W. A. Adebiyi also free of charge.  May Almighty Allah recompense them abundantly.
The Muslim Community appointed a building Planning Committee under the Chairmanship of Alhaji R. A. Oyekan.  It is no gain saying that this committee in conjunction with the internal Building Committee under the Chairmanship of ever ready to serve Alhaji B. O. Alawiye worked resolutely and launched the Central Mosque in December, 1991 with the Late Chief M. K. O Abiola as the Chief Launcher.   He was ably represented by his Jewel of inestimable value – Late Alhaja Simbiat Atinuke Abiola.  Infact, she on her own added more colour to accentuate the occasion.  Alhaji Zulkufli Abija Ramos who chaired the occasion also played a prominent role.  May Almighty Allah reward them abundantly.  Although, the outcome of the launching was not encouraging in terms of the proceeds realized, the Community thus decided to carry its cross by itself by way of generating funds internally.  Ever since, it is on record that the Community has concentrated its major revenue drive on the annual Ramadan Lecture which has become quite effective.
Further achievements were the establishment of Amuwo Odofin Muslim Community Private School, Iman College and the Ultra Modern Amuwo Odofin Muslim Communty Mission House.
